The Routine Exception Pattern

A routine exception can look justified in isolation, especially when an account, customer, project, or operating deadline creates immediate pressure, although the repeated decision to bypass a limit changes what the organization accepts as normal behavior over time across the wider business.

The risk does not begin with a visible failure. It develops when approved exceptions become the ordinary route through a control, leaving teams to rely on workarounds rather than the decision boundaries intended to protect capital, commitments, and operating discipline each day.

Aakash Dil, Head of Market Risk at National Bank Fujairah, has identified repeated exceptions as a warning signal that governance can weaken quietly internally.

Dil observes that every organization occasionally needs a waiver for a valid strategic reason, but a different condition emerges when exceptions become routine and bypassing the control becomes the normal way that work gets completed throughout day-to-day operations every day.

The pattern matters because a recurring exception does not remain an isolated choice. It changes the organization’s tolerance for risk while the original limit continues to appear intact on paper.

Employees then learn which controls are negotiable, which deadlines excuse overrides, and which concerns wait, allowing risk to accumulate through decisions rather than a dramatic event.

The financial consequence often appears after the operating habit has already formed, when exposure, loss, or a failed obligation reveals that the organization had gradually accepted more than its formal control environment could carry safely even while limits remain unchanged.

Repeated exceptions change risk before they change the reported result or attract attention inside routine leadership meetings.
