Why SaaS Billing Units Can Miss Customer Value
SaaS billing units miss customer value when the measurable activity charged bears little relation to the economic outcome produced.
A billing unit can be easy to measure and still be commercially weak. API calls, transactions, compute, seats, or processed data can track product activity without tracking the value the customer receives.
The pricing problem appears when the customer’s economic benefit rises faster than the unit used to calculate the bill.
- Activity is not the same as value. A measurable action can be convenient to bill without representing the customer’s economic benefit.
- Value can rise with little additional usage. Better outcomes can increase while the billable unit remains nearly unchanged.
- Weak metrics limit value capture. The product becomes more important to the customer without creating equivalent revenue growth.
The billing unit determines how much of the value created can actually reach the software company’s revenue line.
The episode examines the gap between usage and value capture.
