Reconcile the observed EBITDA movement to activity, realized price, customer and product mix, labor productivity, procurement, and fixed-cost changes, then isolate what remains unexplained.
About this interactive
The analysis starts with prior-period EBITDA and current observed EBITDA, then rebuilds the movement from current activity at prior prices, realized price, mix, labor and delivery economics, procurement economics, and fixed-cost change. Any difference remains visible as an unexplained residual rather than being assigned to a driver. A separate threshold solves for the realized price change required to reach an entered target EBITDA margin while the other effects remain unchanged. No external margin benchmark or hard-coded driver score is imposed. The view supports operating-margin review within our Private Equity FP&A practice.
Observed movement
The bridge starts with prior-period EBITDA, carries the entered operating economics into the current period, and leaves any difference as a residual before closing exactly to observed current EBITDA.
Driver economics
Each driver is calculated from an explicit economic relationship. The residual is not redistributed across the named drivers.
Target threshold
The threshold holds activity, mix, labor, procurement, fixed-cost movement, and the current unexplained residual constant, then solves for the price realization required to reach the entered target margin.
What the interactive shows
PRIVATE EQUITY MARGIN ATTRIBUTION BRIDGE — ILLUSTRATIVE DEFAULT RECORD INPUTS Prior-period revenue: $20,000,000 Prior-period EBITDA margin: 18.0% Current-period revenue: $22,000,000 Current-period EBITDA margin: 18.9% Realized price change: 4.0% Revenue shifted across customer / product mix: 8.0% Contribution-margin spread on shifted mix: 12.0% Labor and delivery cost base at current activity: $5,000,000 Labor / delivery rate change: 5.0% Labor / delivery productivity change: 3.0% Procurement cost base at current activity: $7,000,000 Purchased-input cost change: 6.0% Sourcing offset: 2.0% Fixed operating cost change: $250,000 Target EBITDA margin: 19.5% COMPUTED POSITION Prior-period EBITDA: $3,600,000 Current-period EBITDA: $4,158,000 Observed EBITDA movement: $558,000 Comparable current revenue at prior prices: $21,153,846 Activity effect at prior economics: $207,692 Price realization effect: $846,154 Customer / product mix effect: $211,200 Labor / delivery effect: −$97,087 Procurement effect: −$271,600 Fixed operating cost effect: −$250,000 Attributed movement before residual: $646,359 Unexplained residual: −$88,359 Reconciled share of observed EBITDA movement: 84.2% Required realized price change to reach target margin: 4.8% Gap from entered price realization to required price realization: +0.8 percentage points FINDING EBITDA margin moves from 18.0% to 18.9% while EBITDA increases by $558,000. The entered operating drivers account for $646,359 of movement, leaving −$88,359 unexplained and reconciling 84.2% of the observed EBITDA change. Price realization is the largest positive contributor at $846,154. Procurement is the largest operating offset at $271,600, followed by $250,000 of fixed-cost pressure. Holding the other entered effects and the residual constant, a 4.8% realized price increase is required to reach the 19.5% target margin, compared with the entered 4.0%. METHOD STATUS Management-entered assumptions. Prior EBITDA equals prior revenue multiplied by prior EBITDA margin. Current EBITDA equals current revenue multiplied by current EBITDA margin. Comparable current revenue at prior prices equals current revenue divided by one plus the realized price change. Activity effect applies the prior EBITDA margin to the change in comparable revenue. Price effect is current revenue less comparable current revenue at prior prices. Mix effect equals current revenue multiplied by the shifted revenue share and contribution-margin spread. Labor / delivery effect uses the entered rate change divided by the productivity factor on the entered cost base. Procurement effect applies purchased-input change and sourcing offset multiplicatively to the entered procurement base. Fixed-cost effect is the negative of the entered fixed-cost change. Residual reconciles the attributed bridge exactly to observed current EBITDA. Required price realization solves for the price change needed to reach the target EBITDA margin while holding all other entered effects and the residual constant. No external benchmark, hard-coded driver score, or hidden weighting is used.
